Learning to Drive - Common Questions and Answers

How many driving lessons will I need?

How long is a piece of string? People vary enormously. Official DSA guidelines state 42 hours of professional instruction with 20 hours private practise. For some this will be sufficient, for others it will not be enough. Those who are well motivated and really want to learn, will do best.

How can I keep the cost of learning to drive down?

By helping yourself to get the most out of your lessons. This involves as much prep as possible outside of lesson times. (Yes, just like school!). I will often suggest a topic for study for next week’s lesson. Don’t be lazy!!!

Do you recommend private practise?

Yes, absolutely, this can be valuable in gaining a variety of extra experiences whilst learning. However, I recommend the early training is done with an instructor, this is after all safer too. Later when you are more capable and less likely to scare Mum or Dad then they can help out. I’m more than happy to discuss lesson plans with them. Also make sure you fit an interior suction rear view mirror.

What are the legal requirements for sitting with a learner driver?

You have to be 21 years of age and have held a license for 3 years (and still hold it) for the type of vehicle being driving. You also have to obey the law as if you were driving yourself, for instance, not use a mobile phone and be under the legal limit for alcohol. Also make sure you fit an interior suction rear view mirror.
